Stitching for Change: Little Dresses for Haiti!

Color explosionOur inaugural “Stitching for Change – Little Dresses for Haiti” event was a productive hit!   We kept the enrollment small so we could work out the logistics of gathering sewists together to do good works!!!    The evening went seamlessly (pun intended) so everyone agreed that we need to add this event to our monthly calendar!

Can’t wait to make more beautiful little dresses! Hope you can join us next month!

“Sip and Stitch” – It’s a Keeper!

Textiles + Wine = A Mighty Fine Time!

Sip and Stitch

DC Threads kicked off 2011 with our inaugural “Sip and Stitch” event!

“Sip and Stitch” brings together local and national sewing experts and DC area sewists (of all experience levels) for a relaxed evening of information-sharing, hands-on learning, wine, and light refreshments.

The events are sponsored by DC Threads and are held at Bits of Thread Sewing Studio in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of DC.

Many thanks to Molly and Judah Greenzaid for offering 20 or so sewing enthusiasts an insider’s glimpse into the world of textiles and the fashion industry.  The Greenzaids shared with us their extensive knowledge of textiles – bringing with them dozens and dozens of swatches of fabrics that we held, touched, and coveted! We even burned some fabric as a way to identify true fiber content – avoiding a visit by the DC Fire Department!!  And finally, armed with the latest fashion magazines and pattern books, Molly demonstrated how to select fabrics to copy the latest fashion trends.

DC Threads in Vogue Patterns Magazine!!!

That’s right!  You heard right!

DC Threads caught some major ink in the current issue of Vogue Pattern Magazine (February/March 2011).

Linda Turner Griepentrog penned a great piece about “today’s sewing circle” – the Sewing Lounge.  She featured photos of ten Lounges from all over the US - including Baltimore’s The Sassy SEWer Sewing Lounge!

Too bad Allison’s Bits of Thread Sewing Studio was but a twinkle of a dream months ago when we were interviewed for the story!

DC Threads was featured in a special side-bar focusing on our community service focus!  RAH!!!

The story is great – we especially love the pics of Doris Lum, our stellar beginners’ coach and Erica and Teoki, a couple of our fav sewists!  How cool is that!????VPM111Lounge 2Lounge1.

Fabrics and Trimmings launched as an Etsy shop in August 2010 –a small venture to keep the Greenzaids doing what they  love best – buying and selling fabrics and trims!  Their point of view focuses on novelty fabrics and trims—the less common offerings in the market.  They are in the fabric markets frequently and attend trade shows nation-wide.  Their vast list of professional contacts and their seasoned reputation provides them with access to the ‘ right people with the right fabrics.’ A recent customer comment affirms this: “Each time I return or see fabric that is electric and beautiful – it is you!”

Hope to see you sippin’ and stitchin’ with DC Threads!!

DC Threads in the Washington Post!

DC Threads (and our new home Bits of Thread) received a little page time in the “Arts and Living Section” of WashingtonPost.com!  The article features sewing resources in the DC area – places to learn to sew and to buy fabric and notions – as well as several great books about sewing!  Check the article out here!

We’re Moving!

movingAfter two terrific years at the North Michigan Park Recreation Center, DC Threads is moving!

When we started the DC Threads program in October 2008, our long-term dream was to have a permanent space where we could hold the lounge and other sewing programs and classes. We are finally in a position to make that happen. Over the past year, Allison has been growing a small teaching business, the Bits of Thread Sewing Studio. This November, she moved into a new space in Adams Morgan that will be large enough to host the DC Threads lounge, starting in January.

The move is bittersweet for us– we are thrilled to finally have a space where we can have all of the supplies and equipment we need in one place, but we will be very sad to leave North Michigan Park, which has been so good to us. We hope you understand our decision, and we hope to see you at the new lounge location. If any of you would like to continue a sewing program or sewing circle at North Michigan Park, we invite you to contact us for more information.

And yes, the DC Threads lounge will remain FREE, and will still be held once a month as before, run by volunteer coaches. The next lounge will be Saturday, January 8, 2011 — more details are coming shortly!

Again, thank you all –especially the staff at North Michigan Park, and our volunteers– for helping us making this such a successful program. The move brings us many new possibilities which we are excited about, and we look forward to sharing them with you in the New Year. Please be in touch if you have any questions, and we hope to see you at a sewing lounge soon!

Summer Vacation for DC Threads Sewing Lounge

Greetings all

DC Threads is taking a summer vacation. Due to a DC Parks and Rec event being held at the North Michigan Park Rec Center on July 10th, the DC Threads Sewing Lounge will not meet.  We will return in August with needles ready to stitch!  Have a great month and see you in August!

Enjoy some photos from yesterday’s Lounge.  We made bags, learned to use new machines, laid out patterns, recycled spouse’s denim shirts, rubbed off hobo bags, and channeled our collective creative karma!  Many thanks to all the sewists who joined us and to all our AMAZING coaches!

The June Lounge is FULL but sew along with us from home!

Welcome summer!

This month we are re-introducing the Sewing Lounge’s  “Project of the Month”.  Each month we will offer up a suggested project that Lounge participants can make or that you can make at home if you can’t attend the Lounge.  This month we will be sewing an EMPIRE WAIST TUBE TOP – a  cool summer top that is soooooo chic and easy to make!  Click on the image below for the instructions and required fabric and notions:

Sew on!

The DC Threads Sewing Lounge continues to be wildly popular – with spaces filling up within hours of availability and long waiting lists!  In an effort to to accommodate everyone interested in learning to sew, we are working to find the time and space to host additional sessions of the Lounge.  Squeezing more hours into the day is always tough – but we thought we would reach out to our sewing community to inquire if any sewists out there know of a space, in DC, (specifically – a free space) that would be suitable to host a Lounge once or twice a month.  Drop us an email at DCThreads@gmail.com if you have an ideas for us.

DC Threads

Thanks again for your support of DC Threads!

Best,

Laura and Allison
