DC Threads is a volunteer-founded and volunteer-driven initiative to help keep the art of sewing & stitch crafts alive and well in the District of Columbia. It was established by two District residents and American Sewing Guild members, Laura Lee and Allison Lince-Bentley.
This website and our monthly sewing lounge offer resources for local sewing enthusiasts to learn more about their craft and share skills with others. Whether you are looking for sewing classes in Washington, DC, want to know where the local fabric stores are, need some new project ideas, or just want to connect with others who share your interests, DC Threads can be a useful resource. Our History
With help from the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce (GWFCC), Laura and Allison connected with the North Michigan Park Recreation center in northeast DC, which had five barely-used sewing machines and light-filled community room that was a perfect home for the DC Threads lounge.
The first sewing lounge was held n October 2008 and atteneded by six participants… and since then we’ve grown by leaps and bounds! DC Threads has developed a following of hundreds of individuals ages 12-70+, from every zipcode in Washington, DC and from many of the surrounding suburbs.
We’ve been able to grow thanks to the wonderful support of many volunteers and caring individuals who have given their time, supplies, and feedback to help us become what we are today. In addition to DPR, GWFCC, and our amazing volunteers, we owe great thanks to the American Sewing Guild, which has included us as a community-service based neighborhood group in its Maryland Chapter. We encourage all of our lounge participants and visitors to check out the ASG and see what a great resource this is for the sewing community.
